How to Manually Install a Magento Extension

Magento eCommerce is wonderful, powerful software that includes a download manager for installing Magento Extensions (add-ons) directly from their Magento Connect service.

However, auto-installation may not always be available or be the best option (for example, the download manager may not work with a site-duplicate testing area or on a local server).  Here's how to manually install a Magento extension.

Manually Installing a Magento Extension in Three Easy Steps:

  1. Login to Magento Connect, login and grab the 'extension key' for your preferred extension.
  2. Head over to Freegento.  Paste in the key and download.
(Freegento will provide you with a downloadable, paste-able zip file for the extension).
  3. Upload the zip file to your site via FTP or your preferred file manager, and extract it to the appropriate directory. *Note: Check out your download first.  You may need to re-zip it a touch, or eliminate a parent folder.

..and that's it.  Freegento has been a lifesaver for working with our Magento staging area.  Be sure to check it out!

Problem using extension key from Magento connect v2.0.
Is Freegento compatible only with v1.0?

In most cases that's the root directory of Magento, but it can vary by extension. You can usually match up the extracted extension folders with the folders in your Magento install intuitively... hope that helps!

What is "the appropriate directory" exactly?
